CourseKata Research

CourseKata was founded by a dedicated team of learning scientists and researchers. With students’ experiences, engagement, and learning at the center, we work to improve our materials and their implementation, as well as to contribute to general knowledge of how students learn in complex domains.

Three circles with icons in them form a circle around and point to a centre circle. The centre circle reads 'course materials' and the surrounding circles show icons for researchers, instructors, and designers.

Our commitment to student data privacy

CourseKata researchers use student data to guide us as we seek to improve students’ learning. At the same time, we apply the highest standards of data privacy to safeguard students from ever having their privacy or confidentiality breached.

Evidence of this commitment is CourseKata’s role as a founding partner in the U.S. National Science Foundation’s SafeInsights research hub. SafeInsights unlocks valuable insights into learning without ever revealing any student information to researchers or moving that information away from the trusted places where it already safely lives.

A Collaborative Approach to R&D

Education R&D has long been stuck in silos.

Researchers develop theories, conduct rigorous experiments, and publish their findings in academic journals. Curriculum designers then must read and apply the research to improve educational materials — a challenging task that doesn’t always happen the way it’s intended.

Research is difficult to translate to real-world classrooms.

Researchers want their work to make a real difference, while educators wish for better, more practical materials that align with their students’ needs. But no one can easily bridge the gap from expert research to adapting and implementing materials to achieve meaningful learning outcomes for students.

The solution: Research done in partnership.

Together, we can change this reality! CourseKata is building a new type of R&D network. Researchers, curriculum developers, and educators collaboratively develop and implement learning materials to reach all students and then study those materials in real classroom settings, while also contributing expert knowledge to the field about how students learn.
